Mumbai Metro’s second underground corridor, Metro Line 11, is progressing as the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRCL) has submitted the proposal to the Centre for approval.
The 17.4-km line, estimated at Rs 23,487 crore, will connect Anik Depot in Sion to the Gateway of India, enhancing connectivity between the eastern suburbs and South Mumbai. The line will run beneath congested areas like Wadala, Byculla, and CSMT, and offer an interchange at Wadala with Metro Line 4. The project is set to serve areas far from suburban rail stations and complement the BEST bus routes.
At Anik Depot, the plan includes a car depot along with a multi-level parking facility for BEST buses. The BEST Undertaking is already working on similar projects at other locations, incorporating commercial use into depot land. The Maharashtra government had approved the project in September, and it will require 22.7 hectares of land. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is being approached for financing.
