Union Minister of State George Kurian announced that Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has assured him of imminent steps to kickstart construction of the long-pending Nedumbassery airport railway station near Cochin International Airport.
The proposal, initially discussed during Union Minister Vaishnaw’s inspection of the Ernakulam-Shoranur railway section last year, gained traction after Southern Railway officials emphasised its importance. A detailed plan was submitted to the Railway Board, and the Union government is also considering a direct access route from the station to the airport terminal. Kurian noted that Vaishnaw confirmed the possibility of train stoppages at the new station based on passenger demand. “To ease the difficulties faced by regular passengers, the railway minister also confirmed that additional coaches will be added to MEMU trains starting in November,” he added.
Preliminary works are expected to start within this year, with the project projected to take around two years to complete and feature a modern, state-of-the-art design.
