In a major step towards sustainable waste management and clean energy, Prayagraj’s Arail-based processing plant has begun producing compressed biogas (CBG) and compost from wet waste.
The plant, inaugurated by Mayor Umesh Chandra Ganesh Kesarwani, is the first of its kind in Uttar Pradesh and the second in India. In its initial phase, the plant processes 100 tonne of wet waste daily, producing four tonne of CBG, with plans to scale up to 200 tonne of waste and nine tonne of CBG per day at full capacity.
The CBG will be supplied to Indian Oil Corporation and Adani Gas Pipeline, and eventually to households for cooking. Additionally, the plant is processing organic manure from waste residues, with organic fertiliser sales expected to begin soon. The success of the project depends on effective waste segregation by citizens, as highlighted by Municipal Commissioner Seelam Sai Teja.
