The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved Phase-1B of the Lucknow Metro Rail Project, allocating Rs 5,801 crore for an 11.165 km corridor with 12 stations—seven underground and five elevated.
Announced by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the expansion will extend the city’s operational Metro network to 34 km. Designed to improve connectivity in Old Lucknow’s densely populated areas, Phase-1B will link commercial hubs such as Aminabad, Yahiyaganj, Pandeyganj, and Chowk, as well as King George’s Medical University, and tourist landmarks including Bara Imambara, Chota Imambara, Bhool Bhulaiya, Clock Tower, and Rumi Darwaza. It will also connect popular culinary destinations, enhancing the city’s cultural and economic vibrancy.
According to the government, the project will reduce congestion, improve urban mobility, stimulate tourism, and drive economic growth. Environmental benefits and improved quality of life are also expected. Officials stated, "By bridging these vital areas with the Metro network, Phase-1B will not only enhance connectivity but also stimulate economic activity, tourism, and ease urban mobility."
