The Tamil Nadu government has granted approval for a new Metro train line connecting Poonamallee to Parandur, passing through Sunguvarchatram. This project forms a key extension of the existing Chennai Metro Phase II corridor from Light House to Poonamallee. The development aims to improve urban mobility and enhance connectivity to the western suburbs of Chennai.
The Metro line will be executed in two phases. Phase 1 will cover a 27.9 km stretch from Poonamallee to Sunguvarchatram at an estimated cost of Rs. 8,779 crore. This segment will include 14 metro stations: Nazarathpet, Chembarambakkam, Kuthambakkam Bus Station, Samathuvapuram, Chettipedu, Thandalam, SIPCOT, Irungattukottai, Pennalur, Sriperumbudur, Pattunool Chatram, Irungulam Industrial Area, Mambakkam Thirumangalam, and Sunguvarchatram. It will also improve access to the Kuthambakkam Bus Station, a key transit hub.
Phase-II will extend the route from Sunguvarchatram to Parandur, completing the full 52.94 km metro line. The total cost of both phases is projected at Rs 15,906 crore. The state government has submitted the project proposal to the Central Government, seeking approval and financial assistance for implementation.
