The World Bank has approved a USD 400 million financing package to strengthen Kerala's public health systems.
This includes a USD 280 million loan, co-financed by the state government. The project, designed under the Programme for Results (PforR) model, aims to improve health outcomes by addressing emerging challenges like climate change and rising non-communicable diseases. The initiative will enhance health infrastructure, expand resource capacity, and strengthen emergency and trauma care systems with 24/7 services. It will also improve digital health applications and increase public health spending.
Local self-governments will play a crucial role, especially in elderly care. Kerala, already a leader in maternal and child health, aims to build a more resilient healthcare system despite facing limited public health funding and new health threats.
